Did this small ass tutorial for a friend of mine who was struggling with her color making decisions.
Thought this would also be useful for the general artist. Short version: Instead of just going darker with your color selections, change the hue of the color as well!The reason why this works is due to the highlight and shadow being the opposite tones.
In this example, the highlight is warmer toned compared to the base, the shade is cooler. This helps makes it more lively, but also appears in life when you start to look closely.
It also works in reverse to have a cool highlight, and warm shadow. However if I remember correctly, that’s most only under fluorescent lighting. So the warm highlight vs cool shadow usually is under natural lighting such as the sun.
